IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT YOUR FINAL EXAM/FINAL PROJECT & REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS ENROLLED IN CLASS: posted 2:15pm Sun. 6/17/07
Final Exam & Final Project Presentation: Saturday June 23 9AM-12:40AM
This is last class meeting for Spring quarter. THERE IS NO MAKEUP. Students who do not attend the class receive grade of zero points for final exam/final project. See useful info about selling your books at end of page)
ADVISORY: YOUR GRADE MAY BE REDUCED. Read carefully.
You are expected to attend entire class. Since students have the option of taking a written exam or presenting a project, the entire class period will probably be consumed in these activities. Late arrival and early departure on June 23 will result in a reduction in your grade on the final exam/project, which will also affect your grade in the course. This applies to all students, whether you are taking the written exam or presenting a project.
Click here for info on PHOTO ESSAY PROJECT (Advice: choose a VERY SPECIFIC topic/theme. If your topic/theme is too general or too broad, you will not be successful. When in doubt, "narrow it down."

If bookstore does not buy them now, they will buy them at end of summer session. Of course you can always sell books online or at any bookstore that sells used books. (Aida's bookstore across the street (Oaks Shopping Center) buys for more than one college). Robert's Bookstore in downtown SJ buys for San Jose State.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNED 6/2. DUE 6/9: 2 parts
I WILL COLLECT HOMEWORK at 9am so bring a copy for your use in class discussion.
I WILL NOT ACCEPT HOMEWORK LATER THAN 9AM to preclude students writing it in class.
1 "Pizza" book:
Read Chapters 4 & 5. For each chapter do the following:
For each chapter: Identify the thesis, question or problem posed by the author.
List or outline the key points of her discussion. (Probably about 10 or so.)
Index cards are too small. Do this on 8.5x11 paper
Make a separate page for each chapter.
No essays. Complete sentences not necessary.
2 "Art" Book
Go through the entire book with some care. Choose the 3 images that you find MOST disturbing. Identify title, artist and page number.
Explain why you find each of them disturbing. This is not an intellectual exercise. This is related to your own personality, your feelings, fears and life experiences. What disturbs you may not disturb someone else. Or your reasons may differ from reasons that other viewers find it disturbing. This explanation will require a minimum of one paragraph per image. Spell out specifically why the image disturbs you. General comments get no credit.
NO CLASS ON MAY 26: MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNED 5/12 AND DUE 5/19 to be collected at Cantor Center
Research sculptor Auguste Rodin and his work.
Write a COMPLETE and thoughtful Image ID for each of the following (i.e. 2 Image IDs total)
The Burghers of Calais
The Gates of Hell
I collected this homework at Cantor Center after you wrote any additional notes based on class discussion at the Rodin Sculpture Garden. If you did not do the homework, you must email it to me no later than midnight Thursday May 24. After that date it will not be accepted and will not earn points. NO EXCEPTIONS FOR ANY REASON.
REMINDER:
Late homework will be accepted for only for absences I have excused in advance. If you don't understand what you are supposed to do on an assignment, it is your job as a student to find out what is expected. In a college class, confusion, leaving early or missing class are NOT ACCEPTABLE EXCUSES for not doing the course work.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNED ON 5/5 AND DUE AT 9:00 ON 5/12:
I checked off this homework (below) on the due date and returned it to students to add to it, based on our class activity. We will work on it again on 6/2 and I will collect it at that time. If you didn't attend class on 5/12, or you didn't have the homework ready, your assignment is considered late unless you had an excused absence (excused by me).
However you must do the assignment and turn it in on 6/2 or you will get zero points as a grade, rather than just a late penalty.
Complete an Image ID form on the following. You are required to do research on these sculptures/paintings in order to have a good understanding of the images, including: subject, symbolism, patrons, and historical/religious context. Also research the medium so you know how the work was created, what kind of material was used.
*Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli
*Death of Holofernes by Artemesia Gentileschi
*Cornelia Pointing to her Children (sometimes called Cornelia Showing Off her Children) by Angelica Kauffman
*Sculpture of David by Michelangelo
*Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci

You chose to be graded on this.

Will be recorded for the attendance grade, rounded to the nearest half hour. Homework assigned on 5/5/07 due on 5/12 at 9:00am.
