Distance Learning Orientation

WELCOME MESSAGE

Welcome to all of you. This is a brief, general orientation for students enrolled in my online courses. It is intended to help you access your course materials and provide you with contact information should you need to contact me before the class starts.

ARE YOU READY FOR ONLINE LEARNING?

Before you go any further, it is important you know what you are getting into by taking this online class. The online learning environment is not for everyone! Before you jump in, it may be a good idea to assess your learning style, your computer skills, and your equipment to see if this class is right for you. The following self-assessment surveys are intended to guide you in your decision about whether an online course is a good match for you. If you are unsure, you may wish to take a web-enhanced hybrid course to determine if you are comfortable with online learning before taking a completely online course. You can also read some Student Feedback from my online courses to get a better sense of what my past students have gotten out of their classes. Yes, it will be very different at first, but if you keep an open mind and give it a try, you might discover that online learning can work for you.

FACULTY CONTACT INFORMATION

I am easiest to reach by email at boardrebecca@fhda.edu. I check this email throughout the day during the week up until 10 PM. Please do not attempt to contact me by phone if you need immediate help. Post general questions to my online office in CATALYST, send urgent requests to my email address, and remember that I can arrange to meet you on campus with advance notice. My faculty website contains links to my course outlines and to the CATALYST portal where your online classroom is housed. If you are lost, confused, stressed and in need help, do not wait one minute to ask for assistance. Whenever you do not understand something, please ask me or one of your classmates for help.

GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR ONLINE CLASS

  • Apply for admission to De Anza College and register for this class, if you have not already done so.
  • Complete the distance learning online orientation and submit the Student Information Form. If you do not do this by the deadline, you are telling us that you are no longer interested in the course and will be dropped so that others may add.Completing this orientation DOES NOT enroll you in the course.
  • This course uses CATALYST course management software. To enter your online classroom go to the CATALYST portal and bookmark this site on your computer. You will find instructions for logging in on the CATALYST home page.

  • Log in to your CATALYST classroom throughout the week. The software tracks your participation and records each time you enter and exit the system and notes how long you spend in each classroom space! Your success depends on your active involvement in the online community, so spend quality time at least three days per week reading and responding to the class discussion. You should plan on devoting 10-15 hours per week to this class, and will spend that time reading course material (essays, poems, books, student and instructor discussion posts etc.), completing informal writing activities (class discussion, grammar/usage/style exercises, quizzes, etc.), and composing formal writing assignments (essays and group projects).
  • Your weekly assignment schedules and any relevant links will be available in your CATALYST classroom each Sunday by 3 PM. Due dates for midterms, papers, quizzes, group projects, and final exams will be posted in the course syllabus.
  • Class discussion will take place throughout the week using the CATALYST forums. Participation in the online community is crucial to this online course, and you will receive points for your contributions to class discussion.
