10 Homework Assign

THIS PAGE IS NOT COMPLETE FOR 2010. FOR 2010 ALL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE POSTED ON THE COURSE CATALYST WEBSITE IN AN EASY TO USE WEEKLY SCHEDULE FORMAT.
PLEASE USE THE CATALYST WEBSITE IN 2010 FOR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS www.catalyst.deanza.edu

PRACTICES ARE IN THE TEXTBOOK book or online at the end of each chapter
HOMEWORK PROBLEMS ARE IN THE HOMEWORK book or online, organized by chapter
ONLINE, it is all part of the "textbook collection" at http://cnx.org/content/col10617/latest
You are also expected to be READING each chapter in the textbook.

CHAPTER 1

READ all of chapter 1 in the textbook

Do Chapter 1 Practice
Do Chapter 1 Homework Problems 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18ab, 28, 29; Multiple choice #19 – 27
Also do the following examples and activities in the text as homework:
Collaborative Classroom Exercise 1.6.1: # 1 thru 5
Example 1-10: # 1 thru 6

Note about Exercise 1.6.1 and Example 1-10:

Collaborative Classroom Exercise 1.6.1 is how that exercise is identified in the print version of the book. Online it is in the Sampling section of Chapter 1 http://cnx.org/content/m16014/latest/ identified as Collaborative Classroom Exercise - Exercise 1

Example 1.10 is how that example is identified in the print version of the textbook. Online it is in the Frequency section of Chapter 1http://cnx.org/content/m16012/latest/ identified as Example 3 Problem 1

CHAPTER 2

READ all of chapter 2 in the textbook

Do all Practices in this chapter:
Chapter 2 Practice 1 and Chapter 2 Practice 2 and Chapter 2 Practice 3 at the end of Chapter 2 (Practice is in the "Textbook" book or online)
Do Chapter 2 Homework Problems 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 parts a and c, 8, 9, 10, 11 part b, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 ,21, 23, 24–30, 31

CHAPTER 3

READ all of chapter 3 EXCEPT you can skip Venn Diagrams which are "optional"

Do Chapter 3 Practice 2 Calculating Probabilities
Do Chapter 3 Homework Problems (listed below by topic):
For Addition and Complement Rules: 33 thru 37
ForProbability Rules: 1, 7, 8 thru 12,14, 21, 27, 38
ForProbability Trees: 2, 3, 24, 39, 40, 41
ForContingency Tables: 15 (omit part g), 16abc, 17, 23;
Multiple Choice Problems #28 - 32

I have listed all the problems that I like in Chapter 3. If a problem list not listed, there may be a reason why, so concentrate on the problems listed avbove. Yes I know these are a lot of problems. Many students need a lot of practice with probability, so I wanted to identify all appropriate problems, so that you would not try the ones that I don't like.

This is what you should do in Chapter 3:
*Do at least half of the problems for EACH topic in this chapter.
*If you have mastered a topic and are getting the problems correct when you do them, move onto another topic.
*If you are having difficulty with a topic and need extra problems, then you should work more of the problems listed until you improve on that topic.
*Then when you are studying and doing practice problems to prepare for Exam 1, go back and do problems listed above that you did not do in the homework

CHAPTER 4

READ Chapter 4 Sections 4.1 through 4.6
covering the Discrete Distributions, Binomial Distribution, Geometric Distribution.
Section 4.9 has the formulas for Binomial and Geometric easy reference.
The Geometric Distribution is NOT OPTIONAL, even though the section in your book may say optional.
You can skip sections 4.7 and 4.8; we are NOT COVERING sections 4.7 and 4.8 for the hypergeometric and Poisson distributions in this class.

Do Chapter 4 Practice 2 (section 4.11) for Binomial distribution
Do Chapter 4 Practice 4 (section 4.13) for Geometric distribution
Chapter 4 Homework Problems: #1, 2, 3, 5 thru 12, 19, 20, 28, 29, 33 – 35, 38 – 43
Problems listed by Topic:
Discrete Distributions: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 38, 39, 40
Binomial Distribution: 7 thru 12
Geometric Distribution: 19, 20
Mixed Practice – Binomial and Geometric: 28, 29, 41, 42, 43, 33 – 35

Do NOT try any problems that are not listed in this assignment. They may involve a probability distribution we did not cover, and you will get frustrated trying to do it if we haven’t covered the material.

CHAPTER 5

READ all of chapter 5

Chapter 5 Uniform Distribution
Do Chapter 5 Homework problems indicated, except for the parts indicated to omit:
3 (omit i), 4 (omit h), 5 (omit last part l), 6 (omit h, i), 7, 18, 19
Chapter 5 Exponential Distribution
Do Chapter 5 Homework Problems 9, 10, 11, 13 , 14, 15, 16
IF WE DO NOT COVER INVERSE PROBABILITY FOR THE EXPONENTIAL (formula with LN) then you should omit 9 part g, 11 part g, 13 part i

CHAPTER 6

READ all of chapter 6

Do Chapter 6 Practice
Do Chapter 6 Homework
Do problems 1,2 , 3, 4, 5 (omit c), 7, 8, 12 through 19
Also go back to problems 6, 9, 31 from Chapter 2

CHAPTER 7 Central Limit Theorem (for Averages)

READ Chapter 7
We are covering the Central Limit Theorem FOR AVERAGES (MEANS) ONLY.
We are NOT covering the Central Limit Theorem FOR SUMS.

Do Chapter 7 Practice
Do Chapter 7 Homework
Do Problems:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 16, 19 thru 21
Note that some of the homework problems have been modified by Mrs. Bloom for this class and this custom version of the textbook. If you are using a different version of the textbook, use the homework link above to get the current versions of the problems. Otherwise some of your homework problems may relate to the CLT for sums, which we are not covering in this class.

THIS PAGE IS NOT COMPLETE FOR 2010. USE THE CATALYST WEBSITE AT www.catalyst.deanza.edu FOR ASSIGNMENTS FOR 2010, ORGANIZED IN AN EASY TO USE WEEKLY SCHEDULE.
