Course Introduction:

English Writing 200 is a pass/no pass five unit course which will help students develop the necessary skills for college-level reading and essay writing. The class focuses on writing fluency and familiarity with the conventions of standard written English.  Assignments will explore the interconnections among readings, class discussion, personal experiences, observations, and social issues. Your success in the class will depend largely on your willingness to learn and work hard and the amount of effort you put in.

Course Objectives:

In the course of taking this class, you will:

·         Respond orally and in writing to a variety of written texts.

·         Write grammatically correct and effectively structured sentences.

·         Learn effective pre-writing techniques, such as brainstorming, etc. to generate ideas.

·         Organize united and coherent paragraphs.

·         Use punctuation correctly.

·         Learn to proofread and correct your own writing as well as edit peer writing.

·         Revise writings and approach writing as a cyclical and continuous process.

·         Participate in group workshop activities.

Course Requirements:

·         Regular attendance and active participation in class discussions.

·         Keeping up-to-date on the assignments and readings.

·         Four formal compositions/papers.

·         A final examination, which will be an in-class essay.

·         Keeping a journal.

·         Unannounced quizzes, in-class assignments, and presentations.

·         Conferencing with the instructor.

·         A Commonsense Guide to Grammar and Usage, Beason and Lester (eds.)

Course Evaluation:

This is a Pass/No Pass course, which means that a grade of A, B, or C will be translated into a Pass on your transcript. To get an A, B, or C (Pass), you should achieve at least a 70% in the course.

Course Assignments:

Journal/Portfolio. You will keep a course journal in which you write responses to particular questions or ideas discussed in class or in specified readings. You will write most of your journal entries in class, but some will be given as homework. You will also collect some of your corrected homework assignments together as a portfolio, which I will collect towards the end of the quarter. 

Quizzes. These quizzes measure your preparation for class and your understanding of class lecture and concepts covered. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class period so do not be late.  They are meant to reward you for your preparation and your on-time attendance.

Participation/Peer Review. You are expected to come to this class prepared with paper, pen, appropriate text, having completed the reading and all assignments due, and ready to participate in discussion. In addition, you will be reviewing the work of your classmates. By reviewing the writing of others, you not only help them, you help yourself. You will learn to identify strengths and weaknesses in the writing of others and, in turn, how to identify them in your own writing. I will grade you on the quality of your review. Other students’ drafts with your comments will be submitted to me as part of the grading process.

Formal Compositions/Papers. You will be required to write four formal compositions or papers during the course. You will be given topics for each paper ahead of time. You must receive a passing grade on each composition in order to pass the course. This may be due to rewriting. Rewrites are due a week after you get your papers back. Your papers should be typed, double-spaced, 12-pt font, with one-inch margins all around. Each essay must be organized and written clearly. Careful proofreading and correct grammar and punctuation usage are crucial.

 

Final Exam. Your final exam will be an in-class essay based and will test your ability to demonstrate writing skills you have mastered in class.

 

Course Policies:

Plagiarism. Plagiarism is using someone else’s words or ideas in direct quote, paraphrase, or summary form and submitting them as your own. I expect no copying or cheating whatsoever, at any time, by any student. Plagiarism may result in automatic failure of the course.

Attendance: Attendance every day is required. You should come to class on time and prepared. If you have to be absent, please call to excuse yourself.  If you have four (4) unexcused absences, I will assume that you have withdrawn, and give you a W. If there are circumstances that are hindering you from attending class or completing assignments please come talk to me about them.

Respect and Conduct: In class we will be discussing a lot of issues and each individual person's opinion must be respected. You are to listen to each other and be considerate of one another at all times. You can disagree with someone, but always in a respectful manner. Disruptive behavior may result in dismissal from the class and eventually being dropped from the course. While in this class you are to:

·         Arrive to class on time and be ready to work;

·         Turn off cell phones and pagers (you will bring us treats if they go off by accident!)

·         Refrain from having private conversations or talking while the instructor or other presenters or classmates are talking;

·         Refrain from reading unrelated material;

·         Stay the whole time until dismissed by the instructor.
