Tutorial Center Policies, Guidelines and Procedures

We will do our best to assign you a tutor as soon as possible. If you do not receive a phone call from a tutor within one week of turning in your application, please check with us. It is possible that no individual tutor is available for your subject or scheduling needs.

For drop-In tutoring, please refer to the online Drop In Tutoring Schedule or the schedules posted in S-43 and L-47.

ELIGIBILITY FOR TUTORING:
You must be a currently registered De Anza student enrolled in the course for which you are requesting a tutor. You also must have a completed and signed Tutee Application on file before requesting a tutor.

NO-SHOW POLICY:
If you cannot keep an appointment, you must call your tutor or the Tutorial Center (408-864-8682/8683) to leave a message in your tutor's mailbox well before your absence.

PLEASE NOTE: If you miss two appointments without notifying your tutor or staff, you will not be eligible for tutoring for the rest of the quarter.

If your tutor is more than ten minutes late, please inform the Tutor Supervisor. If another tutor is available, we will assign you to that tutor.

LIMIT ON HOURS:
You may work individually with a tutor for a maximum of two hours each week. Drop-in tutoring is limited to thirty minute sessions, with a maximum of two hours per week. Sign-up for drop-In tutoring in English, ESL, and Accounting on the day of the appointment only.

LOCATION/ CHECKING IN/OUT:
All tutoring must be done in E-36 (Math/Science) or L-47 (all other subjects) unless specifically authorized by the Coordinator or Supervisor. You must check in and out at the front computer each time you are tutored. Please see staff if you are unsure how to check in or out.

PREPARATION FOR TUTORING:
Please do your class assignments BEFORE your tutoring sessions, and bring your class materials and specific questions for your tutor. Tutors are not allowed to correct your homework, edit papers, or give you answers. Tutors can help you review your own work, and can explain concepts that are difficult for you.

EVALUATION:
During the quarter, we will ask you to evaluate your tutor and your progress. Your opinions about our services are important to us!

  • I will come prepared to my tutorial sessions, having done assigned work and with specific problems or questions for my tutor.
  • I agree to communicate with my tutor and with the Tutorial Center staff if any problems arise.
  • I have read and understood these policies and procedures.
