BackgroundDe Anza participated in online tutoring pilot (funded by CVC) using Smarthinking.com, for AY 01-02 and AY 02-03. Funding ran out at end of W03.
DA was the largest user among all the pilot schools
- F01-S02 had 104 registrations and 70 distinct users
- F02-W03 had 256 registrations, 172 distinct users, and 733 interactions overall
53% of the users used Writing Center. (390 sessions in Essay Center, 28 in Career Writing, 23 in Writing (all subjects.)
Average length of writing session was 30 minutes.
Other areas of demand: calculus (20%), Algebra (9%)
F02-W03 DA also used Virtual Classrooms synchronous online tutoring for statistics, funded by CVC.
Lessons learned:
- Writing biggest demand.
- 24 hr availability more important for math.
- -Needs lots of marketing to students, instructors, tutor supervisors to refer
- Momentum builds with word of mouth over time
- Asynchronous is easier to coordinate than synchronous. Will begin with asynchonous and then add synchronous, MOO, whiteboard, other subjects.
- Have been many requests for passwords after funding ran out (average 3-4 inquiries per week)
