too vague or too bigWhat if a writer asks a question that can't be addressed in one message? Obviously, many questions could best be handled through an in-person give-and-take dialogue between tutor and student. You might want to gently suggest that the tutee try to work with an on-campus tutor.
Here is one way to respond in such a situation:
Hi (student's name)-
I enjoyed reading your paper and your request for help. However, I think that it would be good for you talk out your ideas with a live person, and you would be better off trying to work with an on-campus tutor. Your best bet is probably to try to use the drop-in desk. Look at the L-47 Drop In Tutoring Schedule to see what times a drop in tutor is available.
