Course Description
Music 1: Introduction to Music provides general students with the background to understand and appreciate "classical" and related types of music. It covers the basic elements of musical sound, important musical styles and forms, and important composers from major periods of music history. Prerequisite: Eligibility for English Writing 1A.
Text and Materials
The text is Music: An Appreciation (Brief Edition) by Roger Kamien. A required set of audio recordings is bundled with the text.
You will need Scantron cards (form #2052) and a #2 pencil for 3 tests and weekly quizzes.
Other course materials are online and linked to this web page.
Listening Assignments
You will complete assignments based on musical examples found on the recordings that accompany the text. Questions will be based on both reading the text and listening to the recorded examples which accompany the text. Copies of the assignments are available online in pdf format. The free Acrobat Reader plugin from http://www.adobe.com will let you read and print pdf files from your web browser.
Quizzes
Short quizzes on the reading/listening assignments will be given at the beginning of the period on the first day of each week. The questions on each quiz focus on important material from that week's study assignment. You need a Scantron form and #2 pencil for each quiz.
The weekly reading assignment must be completed before you come to class on the first day of that week. You must come to class having already studied the text information on that week's topic, both so that you will understand the information presented in class and so that you are prepared for the quiz. (For example, you must complete the week three reading before the first class day of week three.)
Tests
The two midterms and final exam may contain multiple choice, true/false, fill-in, and short essay items, with some questions based on listening to recorded musical examples. The final exam is not comprehensive and focuses on material presented after test #2. Bring a SCANTRON card (form #2052 only) and a no. 2 pencil to each exam.
Concert Reports
You must attend and report on two live concerts during the term. Acceptable concerts include professional orchestras, soloists, and instrumental or vocal ensembles, and comparable college or community groups performing music relevant to the content of this class. Optionally, one of the reports may be made on a concert of "non-western" music, subject to instructor approval.
The instructor posts a weekly list of Bay Area Concerts; any concert on this list is acceptable for a concert report. You may also report on other concerts that meet the assignment guidelines, but advance instructor approval is required if you choose to attend a concert that is not on the list.
Complete concert report information will be provided in class and online. The online syllabus contains specific content and format requirements for this assignment and must be consulted before attending the concert and writing your report.
Grades
25% - Homework Assignments and Quizzes
30% - 2 Concert Reports (15% each)
30% - 2 Midterms (15% each)
15% - Final Exam
Let the instructor know immediately if you think you have received an incorrect grade. Grades will not be changed if you wait more than 72 hours after an assignment is handed back or after grades are posted on the web to bring errors to the instructor's attention.
Attendance
Attendance will be taken at each class session. You are subject to being dropped from the class for excessive absences or tardies. However, there is no guarantee that you will automatically be dropped if you stop attending without notifying the instructor. You must contact the instructor immediately if you miss a class or if you decide to drop.
It is your responsibility to be aware of drop deadlines and to make timely arrangements with the instructor and the registrar if you decide to drop this class. The class schedule lists deadlines for dropping with no record or for dropping with a "W" grade.
To meet these deadlines you must contact the instructor during a regular class meeting or at a scheduled office hour beforehand. The instructor will not back-date drop requests submitted after deadlines.
Regular attendance is required in Music 1 classes. Students will be dropped after the second unexcused absence. Each tardy counts as half of an absence; students who arrive late for class more than four times may be dropped. You must contact the instructor immediately if you have to miss class for a valid reason. Attendance policies are strictly enforced.
Late Work
Assignments are late if they are not turned in at the time the class starts. You must arrive on time or early on due dates.
Late listening assignments are not accepted. A listening assignment is late if your are not present to turn it in when assignment are collected at the beginning of class. Your lowest listening assignment grade will not count toward your course grade, so you may miss one assignment without penalty.
Missed quizzes may not be made up. Your lowest quiz grade will not count toward your grade, so you may miss one quiz without penalty.
Late concert reports receive a grade penalty of one letter grade for each day they are late. Reports are late if not turned in at the start of the class period on the due date.
If you must be absent from class on the due date for any assignment, it must be delivered to the instructor or mailed no later than the start of class on the due date (with a post office cancellation verifying this) or it will be considered late. The instructor's mailing address is John Faculty, De Anza College, 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino 95014
Notify the instructor in advance or call by the scheduled test session if an emergency forces you to miss an exam and you intend to make up the work.
Arrange work, vacations, etc. so that they do not conflict with this course. The course calendar lists dates of important assignments and exams.
Copying and Cheating
Students who cheat or submit the work of others as their own work on papers, tests, or any other course assignments on which collaborative work is not specified are subject to an automatic failing grade in the course and will be reported to the appropriate college authorities.
