Course Description

Music 8B is an intermediate course in electronic music for students who have completed Music 8A or who have equivalent experience. The course covers several types of digital synthesis and sampling; advanced MIDI sequencing software; signal processing; digital recording; and other issues. Students repeating Music 8B study digital synthesis and sampling techniques, and other aspects of sound design. The course emphasizes musical projects applying the material covered in class. Students will create at least one performance-quality work by the end of the quarter.

Text and Materials

ZIP Disk. You need at least one PC- or Mac-formatted Zip disk. ZIP disks are available at the bookstore and from other sources. Students may also use their own off-site ftp storage as an alternative.

Music 8B Syllabus. No text is required at the present time. Course materials are being migrated to the web, so access to a web browser is required. Students without other web access may use the computers in the De Anza Open Media Lab in Learning Center West.

All Electronic Music students must join the Electronic Music Weblog site. Visit the site and use the "Join Now" link in the sidebar to join. You will need an email address in order to sign up. If you do not have an email account, sign up for a free web-based email account from a service like http://www.hotmail.com/ or http://www.yahoo.com/.

Students should regularly read electronic music periodicals including Electronic Musician, Keyboard, Computer Music Journal, etc.

Class Schedule

Music 8B meets two days per week at 1:30-3:10. The actual schedule of lectures, labs, and tutoring sessions varies depending upon the enrollment in the class (i.e. - how many Music 8B students are enrolled for the first time versus the number who are repeating for credit) and other factors, and will be announced during the first week of the term. In addition to attending lecture sessions, students meet attendance requirements of the course through the following:

Practice sessions. Students sign up for 2 hours of weekly practice time in the electronic music studio in room A-38, during which you will work on class projects and practice with the studio equipment and software. A sign-up sheet circulated during the first class meetings becomes a semi-permanent schedule for the quarter. You must arrive at the studio during the first 10 minutes of your session or you forfeit the session and another student may use the studio. You may also use the studio anytime that no one else is using it.

Group tutoring sessions. Intermediate Electronic Music students meet with the instructor for weekly half hour tutoring sessions. Sign-ups will also be during the first week of class.

Studio Rules

All electronic music students are responsible for reading, understanding, and following the "studio rules". This is absolutely critical so that we can maintain open studio access for all students enrolled in this class. Consequences for violations of the studio rules include suspension of access to the studios.

Repeating Music 8B

Music 8B may be repeated once for credit. Repeating students will follow a different course of study than first time Music 8B students. Scheduling for these students depends upon the number of students enrolled. If enough repeating students enroll, a weekly lecture session may be scheduled for one of the regular class meetings. Otherwise students will meet with the instructor (at times to be arranged) for weekly small group tutoring sessions.

Attendance

Attendance will be taken at each class session. You are subject to being dropped from the class for excessive absences or tardies. However, there is no guarantee that you will automatically be dropped if you stop attending without notifying the instructor. You must contact the instructor immediately if you miss a class or if you decide to drop.

It is your responsibility to be aware of drop deadlines and to make timely arrangements with the instructor and the registrar if you decide to drop this class.

The class schedule lists deadlines for dropping with no record or for dropping with a "W" grade.

To meet these deadlines you must contact the instructor during a regular class meeting or at a scheduled office hour beforehand. The instructor will not back-date drop requests submitted after deadlines.

Grades

Software/Synthesizer/MIDI Projects - Several short projects (see "Intermediate Electronic Music Assignments") will be assigned during the term. Projects count for 40% of the course grade.

Class Presentation - A 10-15 minute oral presentation on a relevant electronic music subject - due during the final 2-3 weeks of the term. This assignment is described further in the syllabus. The presentation counts for 20% of the course grade.

Final Project - This assignment is described further in the "Intermediate Electronic Music Assignments" section. It is due at the final exam session on "ExamDate8B". The final project counts for 30% of the course grade.

Progress - Based on progress and participation in tutoring sessions. Excessive absences from tutoring sessions may lower your grade up to 1 full letter grade. Progress counts for 10% of the course grade.

Let the instructor know immediately if you think you have received an incorrect grade. Grades will not be changed if you wait more than 72 hours after an assignment is handed back or after grades are posted on the web to bring errors to the instructor's attention.

Final Exam Session

Final projects are due at the final exam session on "ExamDate8B". If you have something else scheduled at this time, you must make arrangements early in the quarter so that you can attend this session. Attendance is required at the final exam session.

Late Work

Late projects will be penalized 1 full letter grade per day. Failure to turn in a final project will result in a grade of F for the course.

Assignments are late if they are not turned in at the time the class session begins. You are responsible for ensuring that you are on time on due dates - arrive early to make sure your work is not late. Better yet, turn your assignments in early.

Copying and Cheating

Students who cheat or submit the work of others as their own work on papers, tests, or any other course assignments on which collaborative work is not specified are subject to an automatic failing grade in the course and will be reported to the appropriate college authorities.
